The subject of the painting is floating down a river, surrounded by hands giving out flowers.
These flowers are called Camellia Japonica, a flower that in the Japanese form of the language of flowers, hanakotoba, means “Perishing with Grace”, thus the name of the painting.
Although the painting is completely open to your own interpretation, mine is, that this painting is about not being afraid to die and thus perishing with grace.
The subject is at ease and just simply floating gracefully down the Styx. But what is your interpretation of this painting? Let me know in the comments.
